circle-in-a-square granny pattern

A couple of weeks ago I showed you this amazing granny square blanket by smosch, do you remember?

I also showed you my 'idea' of what I thought the pattern for the square was, following this I received some requests for the pattern. Well, here it is:

FOUNDATION RING: Using yarn A, work 4ch and join with ss to form a ring.

RND 1: 3ch (counts as 1tr), 11tr into ring, join with ss into 3rd of 3ch. (12tr) Break yarn A.

RND 2: Join yarn B into sp between any tr, 2ch, 1tr into same sp (counts as 1 booble), 1ch. [Bobble stitch (**see below), 1ch] into next sp and all remaining sp. Join with ss into 2rd ch of intial 2ch. (12 boobles) Break yarn B.

**yo, insert hook through sp, yo, draw the yarn through sp (3 loops on hook), yo and draw through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yo insert hook through same sp, yo, draw the yarn through sp (4 loops on hook), yo and draw through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yo and draw through remaining 3 loops, leaving one loop on the hook. Bobble complete.

RND 3: Join yarn C into any sp between booble, 3ch, 2tr, 1ch (counts as 1 treble cluster). [3tr, 1ch] into remainng bobble sp.Join with ss into 3rd ch of intial 3ch. (12 treble clusters) Break yarn C

RND 4: Join yarn D into any sp between trebel clusters, 3ch, 2tr, ch3, 3tr into same sp, 1ch, *[3tr into next sp 1ch, twice]. **[3tr, 3ch, 3tr] ch1]. Rep from * to ** twice and then * once agin. Join with ss into 3rd ch of intial 3ch. Fasten Off.

That's it, you're done!

Don't worry that they don't look perfectly square, this will sort itself out when they are joined.

Incidently, I have used Sarah London's method of joining the squares, have a look here.

Please let me know if you discover any errors in this pattern as it's the first one I've written.

Enjoy!

Tam xo

p.s. check back later, I'll create a flickr group where you can post pictures for us all to see.

Your blanket will turn out very pretty :) One thing I've done when getting circles into squares is use hdc stitches in between the corners to level it out, so that would be in your 4th row. When the square is finished you can't tell the difference in the stitches.
I can't wait to see your progress!

Wow, Tam! Thanks so much for sharing this pattern. I'm going to write this out (I'm not very good with the abbreviations yet) and give it a try. Any suggestions for yarn weight?

I found your beautiful rug and the pattern via Annie's blog at Flower Garden.  Thank you so much for posting it.  I'm a beginner crocheter but I am having success with this so far and loving the process.

My hearty thanks to you. Have finally been officially bitten by the crochet bug and am circle-in-a-squaring as I type. Well ok, not quite as I type. I still haven't perfected the art of the one handed crochet.

Oh I am so glad Tania.  Mmmm one handed crochet, now wouldn't it be good to multi-task like that!  I can't wait to see your work. T xo
